...without getting pedantic...
Mystical IS NOT being padantic. He (she, it?) is taking the time to correct a very widespread misconception among graphics beginners, and one which seriously NEEDS to be corrected at every opportunity. An answer to this frequent question which includes that correction is doing the questioner a great service by providing a reality check which, if heeded, will improve the beginner's understanding and quality of work going forward.
The misconception stems from using the word "conversion" in the context of autotracing. Doing so implies to the beginner that autotracing is some kind of lossless, unambiguous tit-for-tat computer language "conversion" or accurate "translation" like converting a binary value to hexadecimal. The misconception is shamelessly perpetuated by overdone marketing hype claims of software vendors.
But autotracing is not that kind of direct "conversion" or "translation" at all. It's creating entirely new and separate artwork of a fundamentally different type, leaving the raster image untouched. Worse, it is almost always performed by a dumb automatic algorithm, completely devoid of shape recognition, let alone human discernment. It is very ambiguous and very subject to interpretation--and therefore usually very substandard. It is more often bad practice than appropriate. Pointing out that it is not an automagic free lunch helps the beginner understand why.
