I disabled Dropbox and iCloud and tried to reconnect without success. I then thought I'd try the old 'reboot' approach - which worked! I then restarted Dropbox and iCloud and all is working correctly again. I'm not sure if it was the restart or Dropbox/iCloud/restart combination that fixed it - so unfortunately I can't pin it exactly down. That said it's fixed which is great. Many many thanks!
